Hello to you who's presently (and hopefully also pleasantly) reading this section of our joint blog with the EVS volunteers. I'm Rob, a cheerful and warmhearted contradiction to the cold and serious dark-infested corners of Finland whence i came from, or at least that's what the country felt like at the time of my departure.
On the 5th of March 2018 (twas a thursday) i left my home, my friends and family, and most of my belongings to start my adventurous experience here with Outward Bound Croatia. I had no previous knowledge of this particular NGO, or exactly what it was that they did or how they functioned, but when reading up on it i was intrigued right off the bat. Not only were the pictures on their website gorgeous and incredibly inviting (definitely not ashamed to admit that they played a part in drawing me in), but the values that were mentioned, and what OBC wanted to achieve with their work was something that made me sure i wanted to be a part of it. Moreover, after my skype interview with one of the instructors here at OBC, i was much wiser on the subject of what my tasks would possibly include, and the job description sounded suitably versatile for my taste. To be honest, my first thought when hearing about EVS and how it actually worked was that the opportunity sounded almost too good to be true. In fact I asked my instructor (on Finland's side) multiple times the same questions concerning my stay, just to be absolutely sure that I had my facts right and that i had heard correct, and i had. YAY My reasons for coming here, taking part in EVS in the first place, were that i wanted to try something new, something different. I felt stuck and unsure with my life in Finland, and i wanted to step out of my comfort zone, take a risk and jump into unexplored waters so to speak. Standing still in one place for too long a time starts to take its toll eventually, and the surrounding environment starts to feel a bit too safe. I was also interested in experiencing working abroad, and it is something that i would love to continue doing later on in life. Furthermore, i have always thoroughly enjoyed working with people with diverse backgrounds, sharing ideas and listening to opinions. Finally, in my opinion, change is always good for the mind body and soul, and can definitely be an extremely rewarding instrument. |
